Radio Reversal is a show that subjects aspects of everyday life to historico-political, theoretical, cheeky, irreverent, high brow, low brow, eye brow, warm-hearted analysis. Our aim is to see the world more clearly, think about what we'd like it to become, and how we can make that happen.  We think that discussing these sorts of ideas is one way to lessen the alienation that affects many of us trying to make sense of a world that so often makes no sense of us.  We also play loads of awesome music (sometimes thematic!) with great enthusiasm for requests and an emphasis on supporting local artists. It's fun!

Cyclone Alfred, disaster communism & the everyday struggle of liberation

Good morning Zedly ones!! We dearly hope you have all gotten through Cyclone Alfred and its aftermath safe and dry.
For obvious reasons, we've been thinking a lot about disaster, crisis, climate change, community-based responses both in preparation and recovery, and what we can learn for a broader project of transformation.
In case you somehow missed it - South East Queensland was struck by it’s first cyclone in 50 years over the weekend, and while the cell technically weakened to a tropical low before it crossed the coast near Redcliffe, residents still reported wind gusts of over 110 kph on the coast.
In addition to the wild winds, the cyclone also brought massive amounts of rain to the region, including falls of around 260mm between 9am and 5pm on Saturday. This led, predictably, to major flash flooding across the city, and so many of us are once again spending our days googling the best ways to get rivermud out of garages and sharing accounts of how we dealt with the anticipation and dread of Alfred’s long-awaited arrival.
So in today's show, and over the next few weeks, we are digging into the political tensions, questions, and possibilities that emerge in times of acute disaster, and exploring Disaster Communism - the collective, autonomous, locally organised and mobilised efforts to prepare, care for, and recover communities and places in/from disasters, and what Disaster Communism can teach us about the possibilities of life beyond and after capitalism.
In this week’s episode we'll be hearing from friend and comrade Moira Williams from Move Beyond Coal about the importance of local and community based organising and support networks during times of disaster, and the importance of holding those responsible (e.g. fossil fuel companies!) accountable.
We'll also be chatting through the political possibilities these moments reveal, and, of course, playing as much local and new music as we can cram into our crammed show.
Join Anna, Jonno, and Nat from 9-10am on 4ZZZ 102.1FM, and subscribe to our podcast to catch the release of this show and the next few in our series on disasters and Disaster Communism!
